The Geothermal Science and Technology group (Dr. Ingo Sass) at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany) invites applications for the positions of

2 PhD researchers

starting from the 1st of July 2018 or earlier. The positions are funded within a largerEU-Horizon 2020 project for a period of three years.

Your Duties

The first position will work on the “Petrophysical and geomechanical characterisation of Variscan reservoir outcrop analogues and reservoirs” to contribute to the work of the second position, which will focus on the “Geothermal modelling of Variscan Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) in granitic and metamorphic rocks”. Both are part of the EU-H2020 project “Multidisciplinary and multi-context demonstration of EGS exploration and Exploitation Techniques and potentials (MEET)”. Your studies will focus on four sites representative for the Variscan orogen: metasedimentary and metavolcanic successions as well as crystalline basement overprinted or not overprinted by younger tectonics. Study areas are located within Europe (Harz, Palatinate and Taunus in Germany, Northern Vosges in France, Cornwall in United Kingdom, Ardennes massif in Belgium).

Based on literature, existing maps and, where available, on previous fieldwork, you will:

  • identify representative geothermal reservoir analogues in the field and obtain representative samplesduring intensive field-campaigns;
  • determine petrophysical, thermophysical and rock mechanical key properties in our HydroThermikum lab facilities to characterize the geothermal reservoir rocks;
  • proceed with the field data processing in terms of petrophysical rock properties and reservoir rock-fluid interaction for the set-up of geothermal resource assessment models;
  • contribute to parallel investigations of partners regarding tectonic evolution, mineralogical and rock microfabric analyses, 3D-fracture network and structural modellingand their impact on reservoir properties;
  • set up geothermal models to assess the Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical behavior of geothermal reservoir rocks of the Variscan orogeny;
  • evaluate fluid-rock interaction and mechanical, thermal and chemical effects on fracture healing serving as input parameters for THMC simulations to assess the efficiency of stimulation and sustainability of operation of the different test sites

in close cooperation with researchers at other universities and institutions within the MEET-project. It is expected that you will closely cooperate in field and lab work and modelling approaches with an intensive exchange with your project partners.

Your results will have a strong impact on the development of geothermal energy exploration in Europe! We are looking for highly motivated persons with strong interest in one or more of the above-mentioned areas.

Your profile

  • You completed an MSc study programme in Geosciences with the focus either on petrophysics, rock mechanics or numerical modelling of thermal, hydraulic or mechanical processes
  • You are highly motivated and experienced in field and lab work or numerical modelling
  • You are experienced in spatial and geostatistical data analysis (e.g. GIS) and stochastic approaches in 3D-modeling
  • You are fluent in spoken and written English
  • You are highly motivated to publish your results, present them at international project meetings and conferences as well as to complete a PhD-thesis
  • You bring excellent communication skills and enjoy working in interdisciplinary and international teams

We offer a professional work environment and provide many opportunities to work with international collaboration partners from academia and industry through our joint research projects.

The fulfillment of the research and service requirements attached to this position serve at the same time as fulfillment of the academic requirements for a candidate's doctoral degree.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50% or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt): E13, 75%.

Please send your application including a letter of motivation, a CV and relevant certificates (all in one single pdf file) to Mrs. Simone Roß-Krichbaum, Sekretariat Angewandte Geothermie (ross-krichbaum@geo.tu-darmstadt.de) referring to MEET. Please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Kristian Bär (baer@geo.tudarmstadt.de, +49 6151 16 22295) if you have any further questions.

Deadline: 30 June 2018
