POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The presence of microplastic particles was recently confirmed in the Vatnajökull ice cap, the largest ice cap in Europe by volume. There is, however, a very limited understanding of the pathways of microplastic particles onto the ice cap.

This PhD research project aims to:

  • Quantify microplastics in samples from Vatnajökull ice cap and analyse material and types of particles using Raman spectroscopy.
  • Study and model the pathways of the microplastic from potential sources to the glacier, considering particle types and meteorological and geographical conditions.

The project thereby aims to add to the limited understanding of atmospheric transport of microplastics to remote areas. The project will be carried out at Reykjavik University in close collaboration with the University of Iceland, the Icelandic Met Office, and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, where some components of the work may be performed.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated student with good communication skills to join our research team. The candidate should have:

  • Master’s degree in Natural Sciences, Engineering or Applied Mathematics.
  • Experience in working with numerical and mathematical models.
  • Experience in collecting data and conducting experiments.
  • Be self-organized with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Be flexible, result-oriented, and willing to learn and work in a dynamic environment with a diverse team.
  • Have a communicative personality with high social competence.
