Une étudiante de doctorat se mérite un (autre) prix au 53nd Central CAWQ

Il n’est jamais trop tard pour célébrer une bonne nouvelle.  Le 22 février 2018 dernier se tenait à l'Université de Toronto le 53nd Central Canadian Symposium on Water Quality Research, un colloque régional canadien d'une journée. 

Rajwinder Kaur, étudiante au doctorat en sciences de l'eau dans l’équipe du professeur RD Tyagi, s'y est mérité un prix pour sa présentation orale dans la catégorie Biosolids.

Le titre de la présentation gagnante de Rajwinder était “Application of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) for treatment of composting leachate”.

Résumé: Composting process produces a significant amount of leachate containing a considerable quantity of harmful contaminants referred as composting leachate. As of today, numerous composting treatment processes have been studied. Among those studied are: biological processes, physico-chemical processes, as well as advanced oxidation processes.

The use of coagulation-flocculation as a standalone process for composting leachate treatment has been well discussed in terms of removal efficiencies for COD, TSS and heavy metals. However, in most of the studies, chemical coagulants has been used for composting leachate treatment, which are toxic, non-biodegradable and environment pollutants. Moreover, there is lack information regarding some important contaminants such as ammonia nitrogen, nitrate-nitrite and phosphorus.

Therefore, in this study, EPS as a bioflocculant has been introduced to replace chemical coagulants for composting leachate treatment and to remove COD, nitrate-nitrites, nitrogen, phosphorus and metals from leachate.
